In Ayurveda, Arjuna herb is described as very effective cardio tonic. IHD (Ischemic heart disease) are known as Hridya Roga in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda IHD has been classified in 5 different clinical descriptions based upon the vitiated doshas.Vata heart disease is when the pain is acute and shifting in nature. Pitta heart disease is when there is burning sensation. When pain is mild and person feels nausea, heaviness, cough then it’s called kapha heart disease. If all these mentioned symptoms are present then it is called tri-dosha heart disease. Ayurveda mentions Kapha as the major reason for heart disease (Kapha means hardening of the arteries). Arjuna is effective in all the mentioned heart problems and it also reverses the arteries hardness. The herbs in Ayurveda which are known for heart protective nature are Arjun (Terminalia Arjuna), Lasuna (Allium Sativum), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and turmeric (Curcuma Longa)*

Arjuna bark has co-enzyme Q-10 which has been proven scientifically by clinical studies that it helps in avoiding heart attacks and very good tonic effect on liver for cirrhosis. Arjuna also induces decrease in heart rate and blood pressure and its drug-dependent as seen in scientific studies. Scientist found that regular intake of Arjuna caused around 60% drop in LDL level while the HDL level rose. Indian scientist in 1997 conducted one test and published the reports in ‘Indian heart journal’ which proved that Arjuna helps in treatment of weak heart muscles. Around 25 patients who participated had heart attacks history. One group took only the conventional medicines and other group took 500mg of Arjuna along with the conventional medicines for 3 months. The group who had received Arjuna herb experienced 20% improvement in heart functioning and pumping compared to those who had not taken Arjun herb. International Journal of Cardiology conducted double-blind trails in 1995 on 12 patients who had history of chronic congestive heart disease. One group was given 500mg of Arjun herb after every 8 hours and the other group was given placebo medicine. Both of these groups also continued their normal medicine prescribed. The group who was on Arjuna for 15 days experience a drop of 20% in heart rate, which was desirable for these patients, compared to the group taking placebo. This group (taking Arjuna) also experience improvement in fatigue symptoms and frequent heart contractions. In another random double-blind study, out of 58- males with chronic angina (NYHA class 2-3), one group received Arjuna herb and other group received matching placebo. The group who was taking Arjun herb showed improvement in treadmill exercise and clinical parameters compared to the other group. Terminalia Arjuna showed heart protective effect due to its cholesterol reducing properties and because of its antioxidant nature. Recent medical studies have proved a dose depending regulation in blood pressure & heart rate. Intake of Arjun has showed increase in HDL and decrease in LDL cholesterol, which results in overall improvement for heart related problems.* |
