Clinical Studies and Researches on Brahmi

The governmental Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and its Central Drug Institute (CDRI) laboratories in India performed some clinical studies on bacopa. They began isolating active ingredients in Bacopa and derived that, it contained 2 classes of plant saponins. They are aptly christened Bacosides A and B, the anti-oxidant chemicals, which are responsible for the mind sharpening, neuroprotective and anxiety reducing effects. The basic mechanism is not yet understood, but some known facts show that bacosides enhance the depleted neural transmission, preventing its decay and also encourage protein synthesis accompanying the memory formation. They bind with cell receptors and provide anti-oxidant protection to memory centers of brain against the highly reactive and destructive metabolic end products like free radicals.

A CSIR technical report confidently mentions about the effectiveness of bacopa in human beings. The crude extract ‘Brahmi’ derived from Bacopa Monniera, is used for treating cognitive disorders for aging, in Indian medicines since ancient ages.

Studies on healthy normal children and children with deficit hyperactivity disorder show bacopa as a safe, efficacious and well tolerated without any side effects.
Placebo-controlled, double-blind studies at Neuropsychological laboratory at School of Biophysical Science and Electrical engineering in Australia had tested the brahmi herb extracts for 12 weeks on healthy human various subjects and had good conclusions. It was found that this herb significantly improved the information processing, learning rate and consolidation of memory. A 3 month study on the retention of the memory was carried out students, which proved that memory retention was higher when given brahmi dose. Researches also indicate of its benefits in cases of mental retardation as well.

Bacopa has also been used recently for treating depression and, several drugs called SSRI’s drugs like Zoloft, Paxil. Though these drugs are effective, some of the side effects could be unacceptable and hence should be taken carefully. In addition to curing depression, it also enhances the mental performance.*
